Minky Blanky and a Growing Belly

Today my mom looked at me and said, "I think you've gotten bigger since you've been here." And I think she's right. How is it possible for one's stomach to pop out even more in a matter of days?! 'Tis a mystery. Here are some of the fabrics that we chose for the baby's quilt. It's going to be kind of a random, crazy quilt, like my baby's momma. I can't wait to see the finished product.
And here's a full length shot of said bustin' out belly!
Brace yourselves for my return, WestJet! I may need two seats.

Today I bought two outfits for the baby. One will be perfect for her to come home from the hospital in. The other is pink and soft and it's Baby Guess (new with tags from a consignment store...can't pass up a deal like that). I want to buy everything! I do believe that nesting mode has begun. I want to have all things settled RIGHT NOW. I know that there's still 11 weeks till the baby's born, but dangnabbit, I need the diaper genie NOW! And a playpen NOW! And a video camera NOW! And a baby monitor NOW! The list goes on and on and potentially I am going to blow a lot of dough in the next two months. Which will thrill Steve to no end.

Here's a question for all you moms out there: our nursery set has already been used by two other girls who both slept in the crib well past two years of age. Do we need to buy a new mattress for the crib, or will it be OK for one more baby? I have heard that newborns need a good, firm mattress to reduce the risk of SIDS and of course I don't want to take any chances. Any recommendations?

Sweet material & sweet belly!

As for the mattress, I think it should be fine. But if you're worried about it, I'm sure that you could have the health nurse check it out :)

Hi Amanda. I love your big belly. I don't have any belly shots from either of my pregnancies (crazy I know.) About the crib matress. Our matress was used by two kids before we got it, and then Ian slept in it from 10 months to 19 months. It's cracked on both sides but otherwise I think it's fine. I never really thought about it, although our newborns slept in a playpen bassinet next to our bed for the first few months, and that was very firm. Although again, our newborns spent much time sleeping with us in our bed too (which isn't so firm for them). Hmmm. I'd go with my instinct on this one. What does yours say?

Hey Amanda- LOVE the material and yes, you do seemed to have popped out a bit! Lookin' good.

Regarding the mattress- the concern with having a used on is where it was stored. They say it can contribute to SIDS if it was stored in a dusty basement for a long time or something like that. I'm positive it'll be fine. Give it a good wipe down and let it air out for a month or so before you put bedding on it. That's my two cents.

Lookin good, yay for bloggin even when you're on vacation. I don't know if I really have any useful advice on the mattress, but it seems that everywhere I looked as a new mother something else could have caused SIDS kinda like cancer. You just do your best with what you have and trust God with the rest.

I love the fabrics! Too bad we don't know what kind of baby we're having. I have to hold off on the spending spree. I do however, have a good stock of yellow, green & white newborn stuff. If this baby comes out at 8 pounds like I did than I'll have to send Kevin out shopping.

As you probably know, I have no advice for the mattress. If I was you, I'd post a question on my blog & let the experienced ones give some advice. :)

Beautiful fabric! All my girls have used the same mattress in our crib and I never gave it another thought. Unless the older kids have been using it as a trampoline it should be just fine. If it is the vinyl covered kind of mattress a good wipe down should do it.

Your Belly DOES look bigger, crazy! Way to go Mama!
I also like the fabrics. Don't you just LOVE that dotted stuff? My Mom got us some for a little blanket, it's sooooooo cute!
Although your Baby will be in sweet pastels, everyone will be blinded by all the fabrics we have chosen for our Sweetie, cause it's all dark, most of it's tye dye-ish and VERY colourful! Your Baby will be giving our Baby funny looks! Haha!

do what makes you feel good...I know I am not a mom..but have become an expert in a lot of baby world stuff...if the mattress is warpped like doesnt lie right flat I would get a new one or if you can push down in places and it doesn't feel firm...if you go into a store like toyrus and see what a new one feels like in that store the cheepest one is the safest and then compare it to yours and make sure it feels firm it will be fine...most people have any where from 2-4 kids that sleep in the same crib and they don't buy a new mattress for each one...so just make sure there are no tears and that it feels firm!!

Watch out! When I was in nesting mode I decided to paint the entire upstairs of our house, including our yucky floors. It was huge project that we finished in one weekend because I was so desperate to have a "perfect nest".

beautiful fabric!
The mattress should be fine unless you find many tears.
You look fabulous!

Looking good Amanda. I love the fabric too. So how about our weather here in Regina? Nice huh? It was ordered just for you.

I'm enjoying your blog and so, as a grandma, will weigh in on the crib issue. I agree with the comment re. airing it for a month before the baby comes and wiping it down. Any soft spots, just replace it. They're not expensive. One item that my daughter has not used with her second baby is the diaper genie. Makes more sense on a host of levels to just wrap and toss diapers outside once used. Why keep something like that in the house any longer than necessary.
